What's SPEWCH?

They left Cabot at 9:00 a.m. and at 9:10 the rain began.  Cynthia said "Uh oh.”  Amber said, "This is good, it'll be more of an adventure." So off they went.   The rain held off, and it was mosquitoes that proved to be the annoyance.  The trail was wetter than any time in recent history, and a cloud remained around Amber all the way up and back; the only respite was at the top where a welcome breeze kept the evil pests at bay. The trail up was bordered with beautiful wildflowers, among them Vermont's state flower the red clover, yellow Saint John's wort, purple heal-all, pink flowering maple, white blackberry flowers and red raspberries that will provide a lush treat for someone -animal or human - by next week.   Further along we came to a slough where the mosquitoes appeared in earnest. Then up through a field of hay scented ferns, through the delicate blooms of wild sorrel and up the rock staircases to the spruce and poplars that grace the top of the mountain.  The view to the northwest held a pond that was later identified as Seyon Pond, part of a state retreat.  On the way down a barefoot wood sprite of a boy quietly emerged from the woods and surprised the hikers.  Amber named him Mowgli after the jungle boy.  The next trek will be more ambitious - up Pisgah. Since it's right next to Willoughby, a deep glacial lake that holds exquisite relief for hikers, a swim may be in order.     Stay tuned. With "S" under their belts, the project ahead is renamed "Pewch".  The Cabot Connects Mentoring Program is a project of the Cabot Coalition, which is a prevention program to develop healthy relationships to ensure positive outcomes for youth.  We are in need of mentors for a couple of fun, outdoorsy, elementary-aged boys.  For more information, please contact Kathleen Hoyne at 563-3338.
